Selenium

...

Selenium is an essential trace mineral that plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including antioxidant defense, thyroid function, and immune response. Selenium's potential use in managing autism has garnered interest due to its role in antioxidant protection and possible links to brain function. However, the scientific evidence supporting selenium supplementation as a treatment for autism is limited and not well-established. Selenium is used in the base of its antioxidant capacity, the theory of the selenium deficiency en persons with autism and its role as a inmune modulator. Since selenium is crucial for thyroid hormone metabolism, and thyroid hormones are important for brain development, there is interest in whether selenium supplementation could influence neurological outcomes in autism, particularly in cases where thyroid dysfunction is present. Research specifically examining the effects of selenium supplementation on autism symptoms is sparse. A few studies have looked at selenium levels in individuals with autism, but these have not consistently shown a direct link between selenium status and autism symptoms. Selenium is an essential nutrient, but it can be toxic at high doses. Symptoms of selenium toxicity (selenosis) include gastrointestinal issues, hair loss, and neurological damage. This underscores the importance of careful dosing and medical supervision if supplementation is considered.
