Digestive enzymes

...

Digestive enzymes break down food components like proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, aiding in digestion and nutrient absorption. Some parents of children with autism consider digestive enzyme supplements to help manage gastrointestinal (GI) issues commonly seen in autism, such as bloating, constipation, or diarrhea. Enzymes like protease, lipase, and amylase are often included in these supplements. Studies are still emerging, and results on the effectiveness of digestive enzymes for autism are mixed. Some small-scale studies suggest improvements in GI symptoms but lack conclusive results for core autism symptoms. Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) is sometimes included in these supplements for breaking down casein and gluten, though enzyme therapy is distinct from a gluten-free/casein-free diet. Some children may react to components in enzyme supplements, such as bromelain (pineapple enzyme) or other additives. Due to variable outcomes and potential side effects, consulting a pediatrician or gastroenterologist is crucial before starting enzyme therapy.
