Movement-dance therapy

...

Movement and dance therapy is an expressive therapeutic approach that uses movement and dance to support emotional, cognitive, physical, and social integration. For individuals with autism, it can be particularly beneficial as it provides a nonverbal way to express feelings, improve motor skills, and enhance social interaction. Recent studies support the movement and dance therapy as a good tool for enhancing motor skills and emotional regulation, while evidence for social and communication skills are mixed. There is a growing body of research exploring the benefits of this approach for individuals with autism. While the number of studies is still relatively small compared to more established therapies, initial findings are promising. One of the limitations in the research on this therapy for autism is the variability in how the therapy is implemented. Different therapists may use different techniques, making it difficult to standardize and measure outcomes consistently. Dance/Movement Therapy offers a creative and nonverbal avenue for individuals with autism to explore and express themselves. While research is still developing, existing evidence suggests that the dance and movement therapy can be an effective complement to other therapies, particularly in improving social skills, emotional regulation, and motor development. For families and therapists considering the dance and movement therapy, it may be a valuable part of a comprehensive therapeutic plan, especially for those who resonate with movement-based or nonverbal approaches.
