Assessment of communication

...

Communication is performed by using words, sounds, signs or behaviours to express or exchange information and is learned from early childhood. Difficulties in communication can relate to problems with understanding and expressing language, impairments in hearing, speech or vocal functions, and also to psychological issues. The assessment of communication (including initial screening to determine the need for comprehensive assessment) uses observation, interviewing, standardized selfreported questionnaires or communication tests to determine the presence and/ or severity of impairment in communication functions, ascertain their impact on functioning, and inform care planning, including the need for referral or follow-up.
