Decision making

The process of decision making involves the ability to select from various options, put the chosen option into action, and assess the outcomes of that choice. This can manifest in different scenarios, such as picking and purchasing a specific item or selecting and carrying out a particular task among several that need completion.

The evaluation of decision-making skills, which includes an initial screening to determine if a comprehensive assessment is necessary, utilizes observation and interviews. These methods aim to identify any difficulties in decision making, assess the impact of these difficulties on daily functioning, and provide information for care planning, including the consideration of referrals or follow-up assessments.

Throughout the assessment, care, and treatment process, it is important to assess an individual's capacity to make decisions on a case-by-case basis. This assessment should be conducted in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act and supporting codes of practice. To assist individuals in making decisions, it is crucial to ensure their communication needs are effectively met. Additionally, if appropriate, involving a family member, caregiver, care worker, or another individual familiar with the person's communication abilities can be beneficial.
