Glutathione

...

Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of three amino acids: glutamine, cysteine, and glycine. It is one of the body's most powerful antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress. It plays a key role in detoxifying harmful substances in the liver and other organs, contributing to overall cellular health and function. Glutathione supports the immune system by maintaining the function of immune cells and modulating inflammatory responses. Supplementing with glutathione or its precursors (e.g., N-acetylcysteine or cysteine) is thought to boost antioxidant defenses and support detoxification, which could theoretically help mitigate some autism-related symptoms. Some studies have explored glutathione levels in individuals with autism but have not consistently shown that supplementation improves autism symptoms. For instance, research on the use of glutathione as a treatment has yielded mixed results. While glutathione supplementation is generally considered safe, high doses or long-term use could have potential side effects. Common issues include gastrointestinal discomfort, and more severe side effects are rare but possible. If considering glutathione or its precursors, it should be part of a comprehensive approach to autism that includes evidence-based therapies and interventions.
